The Situation
Manual oyster grading is slow, physically demanding, and inherently inconsistent. Output quality varied between operators, throughput was constrained by the number of people available, and the process could not scale to meet growing production demand without adding significant headcount.
The producer needed a solution that could match the throughput of a large grading team while delivering consistent, objective results across every production run.
The Work
React Automation built a custom machine vision system capable of measuring and grading oysters at 4 to 8 per second, a throughput rate equivalent to more than a dozen skilled hand graders working simultaneously.
A key design consideration was operator usability. Production staff can adjust grading templates themselves to reflect changing product specifications or market requirements, without requiring engineering support. The system was built to be owned and operated by the production team day to day.
The Result
The system replaced manual grading entirely. Throughput reached up to 28,800 oysters per hour, consistent grading outcomes were achieved across all production runs, and operator fatigue and manual handling demands were significantly reduced.
The operation can now scale production without adding headcount, and grading specifications can be updated by production staff without engineering involvement.
